Stephen Balliet (1753-1821)
Early Life
Stephen Balliet was born in 1753 to Paulus Balliet (1717-1777) and Maria Magdalena Wotring[1]. Stephen Balliet was a lieutenant colonel of the First Battalion, Northampton County Militia[2] in the Continental Army[3]. The Balliets were not the only people to take action, many other settlers from Whitehall were eager to take arms in their fight for independence[4]. Stephen Balliet commanded a regiment at the battle of Brandywine in 1777[5].
Family
Stephen Balliet married Magdalena Burgalter (1765-1805)[6]. The couple had two sons, Stephen and Joseph[7].
Later Life
Stephen Balliet was a merchant by trade[8]. In 1789, Stephen Balliet was elected to the House of Representatives in Harrisburg, PA, and served until 1790[9]. Then, in 1797, Stephen Balliet was authorized as revenue collector for the Second District of Pennsylvania[10]. Stephen Balliet passed away on August 4, 1821.
