Gustavus A. Aschbach (1826-1875)

Gustavus A. Aschbach was born in Rastatt, Germany on March 3, 1826 [1]. Aschbach arrived in Allentown, PA in 1854[2]. He was repeatedly elected as city engineer of Allentown. In this role, he made many maps of the city[3]. He was responsible for the 1865 Aschbach Map of Lehigh County[4].
Aschbach served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He built fortifications in Ohio and Kentucky under Generals Simpson and Burnside. As a result of exposure during this time, he became disabled and died of related complications on April 17, 1875 [5] [6].
