Gustavus A. Aschbach was born in Rastatt, Germany on March 3, 1826 [1]. Aschbach arrived in Allentown, PA in 1854. He was repeatedly elected as city engineer of Allentown. In this role, he made many maps of the city [2]. He was responsible for a map of Lehigh County published in 1865 (see 1865 Aschbach Map of Lehigh County)

Aschbach served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He built fortifications in Ohio and Kentucky under Generals Simpson and Burnside. As a result of exposure during this time, he was disabled and died of related complications on April 17, 1875 [3].
